Understanding Fraction on a Number Line
To understand fractions better, we can represent them on a number line: a number line is a straight line with numbers written down on it. It's like a map of numbers that helps us compare them and do basic math. This helps us understand the intervals between two integers and how fractions are created. To represent fractions on a number line, we need to divide the line into equal parts from 0 to 1. The fraction's denominator tells us how many equal parts we need to make. For example, if we want to represent 1/8 on a number line, we should divide it into 8 equal parts and mark the first interval as 1/8. We can then mark the next intervals as 2/8, 3/8, and so on until we reach 8/8, which equals 1.
